In a step reflecting the growing attention to the rights of persons with disabilities in Yemen, the Cabinet, during its meeting today, Thursday, in Sana'a, discussed a memorandum submitted by the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Mr. Samir Bajjala, regarding the outcomes of the seminar on "Updating and Developing the Legislative Framework for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities."
The seminar, held in December 2024, was the result of joint efforts between the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Fund for the Care and Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, and the National Union of Associations for Persons with Disabilities in Yemen.
During the meeting, the Cabinet expressed its commitment to translating the seminar's recommendations into practical plans to be implemented on the ground. It emphasized that these recommendations, aimed at improving the lives of persons with disabilities and ensuring their rights in all fields, align with the national responsibility of the Government of Change and Development toward this group.
The seminar, which took place over two days in Sana’a, discussed ways to develop national legislation related to the rights of persons with disabilities and resulted in 27 key recommendations. Among the most notable were the establishment of an independent government body dedicated to the rights of persons with disabilities, a review of national laws to ensure their compatibility with Islamic law and international conventions, and the provision of comprehensive legal protection for this group.
Dr. Ali Nasser Maghli, Executive Director of the Fund for the Care and Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities, expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasizing that these efforts represent a significant step toward positive change in the lives of persons with disabilities. He also praised the active role played by the Cabinet, particularly the great efforts of the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Mr. Samir Bajjala, in bringing the issues of persons with disabilities to the decision-making table.
For his part, Mr. Othman Mohammed Al-Sallawi, Deputy Executive Director of the Fund and Head of the Monitoring Team for Implementing the National Strategy for Persons with Disabilities, considered the implementation of these recommendations as the beginning of a new phase of serious work to build an integrated system in line with the national strategy for persons with disabilities. This system aims to safeguard their rights and ensure their active participation in society.
It is worth noting that the recommendations issued by the seminar, along with the government's commitment to their implementation, reflect a sincere national will from the members of the Government of Change and Development to achieve social justice and integrate persons with disabilities as an active part of society.
